Day 2: Things I Never Learned

Today’s poem had its beginnings in a workshop prompt from the talented and lovely Kristin LaTour. I did a free write from her prompt that included the line “poker face that would land me in the poorhouse.” After some fussing and fiddling, this little piece arrived. I’m not sure the ending is working, but I like the draft. Thanks, Kristin!

Things I Never Learned

These tricks

of stealth, this

wearing of masks.

(Poker face for

the poorhouse.)

To flip the switch,

set the strong jaw

back to steady.

To pull the sleeves

down far enough.

How not to live

in glass houses.

How to cock

my arm and toss

the first stone.
