On this Independence Day, I have been independent from the following:

  • work
  • alarm clocks
  • make-up
  • shoes (after my run, anyway)
  • worry
  • chores
  • self-doubt
  • loneliness
  • social media
  • firework noise (so far)
  • crowds

During this Fourth of July week, I have also moved forth with my writing after a dry spell which followed the intensity of my residency:

  • drafted three new pieces in the Lewis and Clark series
  • prepped four journal submissions
  • received a journal acceptance
  • had a writing/lunch date with friend and fabulous poet Kristin LaTour
  • received a Best of the Net nomination from Apple Valley Review
  • attended a reading at a reading series I admire
  • booked a reading at said reading series for next winter

May you celebrate your independence in whatever way you see fit today. As John Adams once said, “Let us tenderly and kindly cherish, therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write.”
